Good health and a fit body are no less than a boon in today’s difficult times. The pandemic has rudely pulled many of us out of our comfort zones to proactively work towards achieving both. While we may intend to adopt a better lifestyle, without deliberate efforts it’s no more than castles in the air. Diet isn’t just what’s on your plate. Every morsel of food that enters your mouth must be accounted for.
For today’s B word, I’m sharing a mix of fruits, vegetables and grains that can be included in your daily diet.
Bananas
Bananas are the most commonly available fruit and a powerhouse of nutrients. From babies to older people, they cater to everyone’s nutrition needs. They’re high in fiber, potassium and Vitamin B6 and aid in improving digestion. They help build muscle mass and regulate blood pressure levels. Their sugar content makes them an ideal choice for pre-workout smoothies and shakes.
Broccoli
This green flower-like vegetable is one of the few vegetables that taste good raw as well as cooked. It is high in Vitamins C and K and the phytonutrient sulforaphane in it helps ward off fat storage. A cup of it everyday can help meet your entire Vitamin C requirements. Use it in salads, rice or in baked vegetables with cheese to enhance its taste.
Brown Rice
Brown rice is a healthy replacement to white rice and cuts down some of its undesirable properties. It is rich in nutrients and contains Vitamin B1, magnesium and fiber. It is slightly thicker in texture and can take longer to cook but can fit well with most rice preparations.
Berries
The cute little colourful berries are a foodie’s delight. They have many varieties like blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, cranberries etc each having a distinct taste. They’re high in nutrients like vitamin C and manganese but low in calories. They also have anti-inflammatory properties. Churn them up in an icecream, make a lolly or as toppings on your cake, they perfect every recipe!
Additionally, there are bell peppers, beet root, basil leaves and many other foods that make your everyday meal a balanced meal. Take your pick and say hello to good health!
