English translation:

Sitting by my window pane,

I keep gazing at it longingly;

I pray my heart, a gentle plea,

That it won’t vanish suddenly.

Into the hopes I hold so fast,

He pours the hues of joy at last;

That lovely, arching rainbow sight,

Enchants my spirit, pure and bright.

Though life has many pains to bear,

They hide within me, buried there;

In solitude, they find their way,

And flow as pearls from eyes astray.

Whom can I make to understand,

A scolding touch is good in hand?

That someone cares, takes heed of you,

Is just one single truth that’s true.

Why do they leave us, people dear,

For reasons strange, that draw them clear?

My mother watches from above,

Is that not like a living love?

My life, my struggles, all my own,

I tell myself, each day I’ve known;

And yet, the people walking near,

It is in them I persevere.

Perhaps this is what ‘living’ means,

To chase the wishes in our scenes;

I hope a rainbow, bright and deep,

The colours of my life will keep.

  1. What a deeply poignant poem, Varsha. I could feel the sense of loss and then the awareness of those around us. The ending is something we all wish for, isn’t it? “I hope a rainbow, bright and deep,
    The colours of my life will keep.”

  2. Few months back my son was participating in an inter school competition on rainy day theme… I was supposed to create the pop for the performance of him. The first thing that came in my mind was Rainbow and I made one… Yes, rainbow is something that attacts me a lot like a new hope in the darkest cloudy nights.

  3. I think many of us are waiting for our lives to be filled with the colors of the rainbow so that a lot of problems dissolve. A very relatable poem; at least for me.

  4. Wow!! Its so beautiful!! The rainbow symbolizes fleeting joy and the yearning for color in life, while the verses reflect inner battles, loss, and longing, yet embrace resilience and the desire to keep moving forward.

Appreciate your feedback!
