Are you happy?

Because of my habit of being an inconsolable crying baby while watching emotional movies, I haven’t yet seen the famous ‘The Pursuit of Happiness’. I know it is one of the finest movies ever made and is highly recommended by everyone who’s seen it, but after knowing roughly what the film is about I cannot yet bring myself to brave the attempt.

I have my reasons for it, although they might not seem entirely plausible to anyone. I feel that the pursuit of happiness, out of all types of pursuits, is the most depressing one. You want to be happy and you’re working towards it, good. But then, what about today? For a possible happier tomorrow can anyone live a regrettable present?

Many people spend their lives trying to achieve or live a dream which isn’t theirs. Irrespective of the fortune or fame it might’ve brought, it isn’t what they’d seen themselves doing. They try to equate everything they have with happiness, and possibly never find it. Yet, in this case, it becomes a pursuit too. Isn’t it?

Sometimes when something good happens with us we have this underlying worry that it won’t last. Also, as our aspirations grow, so does our restlessness. We want more. We need more. What is slowly being left behind in this rat race…we realise much later.

‘Feeling happy’ is probably one of the easiest but also the most neglected and underestimated thing to do. Is it really that difficult to lay our guards down, forget our personal or professional worries, get over our silly grudges and allow ourselves that unbridled dose of happiness? Guess not. 🙂
