Book Review: Kanpur Khoofiya Pvt Ltd #BookChatter

Hi friends! This is my first association with #BookChatter and I’m excited to be a part of it. Today I’m doing a book review for Kanpur Khoofiya Pvt. Ltd written by Richa Mukherjee which has already gathered quite a few fans for itself.

About the book

Kanpur Khoofiya Pvt. Ltd is a detective agency helmed by Prachand Tripathi, a non-IIT engineer and elder son of a disappointed father. The Tripathi clan is a crazy bunch; typical harried Indian parents, a wannabe actor Uncle, a brother who is lead singer of Kanpuriya Beliebers Rocks band, a farting Dadi and a self-important cow Hirwa.

Prachand has impressive observation skills which are best put to use in locating missing pets, tail cheating spouses and the like. His loving wife Vidya encourages him though and is his biggest support system at home and work. Life takes a turn for this couple when they’re paid handsomely to follow Shailaja Kapoor, a famous yesteryear actress who is visiting Kanpur.

However, they soon get involved in more than what they had signed up for. Shailaja gets kidnapped and her gambler husband is murdered in her house. The detectives Prachand and Vidya try to help the police but somehow become primary suspects in the case. What follows is their quest to not only nab the culprit but also prove their innocence to their family and the world.

My thoughts

First of all, I loved the cover of the book. This is Richa’s first book I’ve picked up and her style of writing impressed me. She has brought out the Kanpuriya element beautifully by using colloquial lines where required. Her tongue-in-cheek sense of humour had me in splits in some places. Prachand is an interesting character and his grasp on the happenings around him is noteworthy.

Having said that, the book has some areas which as a reader I felt could’ve been better. Prachand’s father’s character for instance is as clichéd as any. It would be appealing to have a supportive one for a change and then see where the story goes. I couldn’t figure out where I was headed since the pace slowed down on occasions. Also, Eureka moments come about a bit too conveniently at times. I wish Prachand’s keen intelligence brought them about.

To sum up, Kanpur Khoofiya Pvt. Ltd is a good read with its share of funny moments. It takes you on a small town trip and you can’t help falling in love with it. This book would make a great travel companion as its light and not too long.

My rating: **** 4/5 stars
