Battered and disgraced, she lay in a dark corner.

Her day’s wages, a hundred rupee note, securely hidden in her closed fist.

Noticing a flicker of light at the open, unmanned gate, “This is it!” she thought.

Her heart pounding, her eyes alert, she sprinted out noiselessly and never looked back.

Finally, she was free.
