Am I raising a Sheldon Cooper?

Irrespective of the medium involved, there are certain characters that strike a chord with us and stay with us for being endearing, interesting, layered, or even irritating, long after our engagement with them. Subconsciously, we let our imagination run wild and end up deriving their far-fetched parallels with our own lives.

Risking the possibility of being guilty of doing something similar, Iโ€™m sharing with my readers few peculiar personality traits of A Jr. Sheldon Cooper, the famous theoretical physicist and eccentric human being from The Big Bang Theory has been my favourite, ever since I saw its first episode and I’m startled by A Jrโ€™s habitual and behavioural similarities with him.

It would be mighty helpful of you, if you could reinstate my faith in my sanity for knowing that Iโ€™m being paranoid, or worse, warn me to be prepared for the inevitable!

A Jr considers it his birthright and lawful duty to bless anyone, irrespective of their age, with the priceless pearls of his wisdom. I already feel sorry for the lectures Angel will be subjected to when she grows up! :-/

He cannot zip his mouth, even if someone begs him to. He can talk non-stop on matters like the Kabaddi league, his lunch break at school, his cycling experience, the neighbour’s dog, the watchman….and a lot more. Thatโ€™s just about anything, you see? ๐Ÿ˜›

He might reluctantly agree with something he doesnโ€™t want to, but not without making his displeasure clearly evident and sulking under his breath.

He is super-finicky about his food. I once surprised him by making his favourite Pav Bhaji. He gave his plate a look, then looked at me and asked flatly, โ€œYou remembered to add lemon juice to it or forgot like last time?โ€ No further reaction. ๐Ÿ™

Continuing from the last point, he has least regard for anyoneโ€™s feelings as long as heโ€™s comfortable. This thing continues with his friends too, and typically bothers me the most!

Compromise is a word he has no clue of, although I sometimes deliberately do the opposite of what he wants, only to make him go with it. Needless to say, he becomes a big cry baby and complains. ๐Ÿ˜›

Criticism shouldโ€™ve been his middle name! He has set rules, and anything that doesnโ€™t comply with it is, well, criminally wrong. Whatever he does though, you have to say it is good.ย

Getting him to engage in some sport is like asking a fish to give up water. He is something like Harsha Bhogle, who never played cricket but is an acclaimed critic. It is like telling others how and why they got wounded when you havenโ€™t the slightest idea of what a wound is. ๐Ÿ™

What Soft Kitty is to Sheldon Cooper, Yashomati Maiyya se bole Nandlala is for A Jr. When A Jr was younger, A had to start over many a times for mixing up the tune or the lyrics, and sometimes even for a less-than-loving tone!

Absentmindedly, I find myself rolling up my eyes, resignedly looking up and asking the deities out there, โ€œWhy me!?โ€, a la Mrs Cooper. Thankfully, I don’t think my son is crazy and most definitely don’t want to get him tested. ๐Ÿ˜›

I would be proud of my darling if he turns out to be even near brilliant and exceptional like Sheldon Cooper, but he doesnโ€™t necessarily have to be such a pain in the backside too, right? ๐Ÿ˜€

Which brings me back to the question in the title. Am I raising a Sheldon Cooper? Do I have your blessings? ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. May the Force bless your tiny Jedi! No matter what genius he would blossom into and what turfs he might set afire with his intelligence, he will always remain your A Jr.

  2. This is probably a good time to say ‘Bazinga’ ๐Ÿ˜›
Well, I’m sure they’re just isolated examples; but from the ones that you’ve given, it does sound like you’ve got a mini-Sheldon Cooper on your hands.
Enjoyable take on the similarities between Sheldon and A Jr

PS How old are your kids now?

    1. Haha…yes Bazinga! ๐Ÿ˜€

Parents are paranoid to a certain extent, so I guess I might’ve gotten carried away a bit. The similarities though are very real. ????

I have two kids. A Jr is 7 and a half years and Angel is a 15 months old. Both are a riot.

PS You’re the first person to ask me this question. I liked the gesture. Thanks. ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. This is an interesting read and I find all these points are really cute and admiring, specially the food one..and his reaction reminded me my elder one’s..she also does the same.

  4. After reading your Pav Bhaji incident, I believe that this is now generation is the same …but I trust they are growing smarter and for sure you are blessed !!

  5. I would say enjoy the similarly. From your post and the pav bhaji incident, I can only imagine what level of precision your Sheldon Jr expects.

  6. I hope this is just a passing phase that A Jr grows out of. I really do! Why? Because I am not a fan of Sheldon Cooper at all! ๐Ÿ™‚

  13. Sheldon is one of my fav after the big bang theory and it isn’t bad if your junior is growing to be intelligent like the character, afterall you are super intelligent too.

  14. I’m assuming this post has been written in good humor, but on the other side, Sheldon cooper’s character study mentions that he shows symptoms of aspergers ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š
